Our History

Augusta Housing was created through city council resolution in 1979 under MRSA 30-A §4721 to help address the housing needs facing the Augusta community for low and moderate income individuals and families. Although the housing authority originally had a staff of just two and was limited to administering HUD-funded Section 8 housing certificates, it has since grown to expand beyond the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program to administer a growing portfolio of federal and locally funded housing programs. To better promote and expand housing opportunities in the capital region, Augusta Housing began developing affordable housing in 2014 and has successfully constructed award-winning senior and workforce housing projects since that time. Through diversification of programs and funding, Augusta Housing has become a leader in affordable housing programs and development with plans for continued strategic growth.
